As it turns out, I don’t have shin splints. What I have is some form of lateral tibial stress. More homework tells me it may be anterior compartment syndrome. ‘Shin splints’ was previously (and still is) used as a bit of an umbrella term for all pain associated with the lower leg, but experts began to dissociate the various types in favour of better diagnosis and more accurate treatment. Many websites clearly still use it as an umbrella term as whatever I Googled led me to those websites, which subsequently influenced my Youtube searches for taping methods. What I then did was just look for one where the point of pain was on the lateral rather than the medial side, and got taping.
Always good to do your homework!
Also, as I’ve said before, I’m not an expert in these matters, and clearly I make mistakes as well. But everything you need to get the facts straight is on the Internet - you just need to do a bit of sifting.
