The two women I was rooting for in the women’s boxing flyweight division both made it to the semi-finals, but sadly didn’t make it through to the last round.
A rather nice consolation about boxing is that both semi-finalists who don’t make it to the finals get medals - above is Marlen Esparza of the USA with her bronze, looking absolutely gorgeous. (She primps herself before every fight, so in a way I’m really not surprised).
I know she mentioned she wants to stop fighting after the Olympics to concentrate on college, but I would really love to see more of her in the future. She has a KILLER winning rate.
And of course, the Living Legend, Magnificent Mary, aka Mary Kom of India. This woman has BALLS, and really is such an inspiration. 5 time World Boxing champion, a devoted wife, a mother of two - she is incredible beyond words.

But props all round to the women who made their debut at the Olympics this year at the first ever competition of women’s boxing. Each is amazing in their own right - for defying the odds and expectations of what society thinks women should look and act like, and for bringing such wonderful spirit and skill to the sport.
