Israeli Arab boys warm up prior to a fight during Israel’s National Youth Boxing Championship in the Arab village of Arabe, northern Israel. Boxing provides a unique chance for young Arab and Jewish competitors to meet in the ring as equals, equipped with helmets and gloves and playing under the same set of rules.

Oded Balilty explores how young Israeli Arabs and Jews come together as equals in the boxing ring.

I absolutely love the vivid emotion you can see on everyone’s faces in these photos, and when it comes to boxing in general - whether it’s the intense look of someone digging deep into training or a fight, brash confidence flashing across a fighter’s face when a good blow connects, a bit of fear and fml when someone reacts too slowly or makes a mistake in the ring, the tough tough love coaches give the kids they train, the thrill of finishing a bout regardless of whether or not you win or lose (because that in itself is a major accomplishment - to take the beatings and still stand tall at the final bell).
